Over the last few years, beards have without a doubt been one of the biggest trends in male grooming. Everybody from the likes of David Beckham to Jason Momoa have been known to sport an impressive display of facial hair, and the trend has of course trickled down to the Regular Joe on the street. But not everybody has the beard budget of the rich and famous, so how do us Regular Joe’s maintain a healthy set of whiskers?

Just like the hair on your head, your beard needs to be washed regularly. We wash our hair, just as a means of basic hygiene really so why would beards be any different? It’s recommended you wash your beard 1-2 times a week with a beard shampoo. Proraso have a great range of beard washes that come in a variety of scents! It’s important to use a beard shampoo rather than a regular shampoo because a regular shampoo will dry out the beard and strip it of its natural oils.

Once your beard is squeaky clean, you’ll need to keep it nourished and moisturised. That’s where you have a choice of a beard oil or a beard balm. A beard oil is essentially a leave in conditioner that will moisturise the hair down to the root, keeping the beard healthy and shiny. A beard balm will offer you the same benefits of a beard oil but will give it more of a hold, which is perfect especially for longer beards. Vanilla & Mango Beard Oil from Apothecary 87 has all of the ingredients to keep your beard well kept, as well as having an unbelievable scent! If it’s a balm you’d prefer, we highly recommend Beard & Baccy balm from Captain Fawcett and Ricki Hall. It’s made by infusing 5 base creams, waxes and 10 essential oils to create a unique beard balm that would fit into any gents grooming routine.

To go along with your oil/balm, you’re going to need a beard comb to keep your beard in tip top shape. There are so many benefits of combing your beard, one of which is preventing ingrown hairs. Combing your beard each day will ensure the hairs grow in the right direction and will help you to avoid painful ingrown hairs on your face.

A beard comb will also be handy when applying your oil or balm. There’s only so deep you can get with your fingers, so using a beard comb will help to evenly distribute the product from tip to root. Having the product run down to the root will ensure your beard and skin continue to be nourished. One of our favourite beard combs is this wooden number from Dear Barber. Not only does it gently distribute beard oils but it also has gentle edges which means it will not scratch the skin when in use!
