We’ve all been there, and we all hate it. The dreaded post shave burn. Shaving is the quickest solution to removing any unwanted hair, but shaving incorrectly can lead to problems worse than a few stray hairs.
Post shave burn can occur to any part of the body that has been shaved, but the face is the most frequently problematic area. The face is often exposed to the elements and they can play a big part in the way skin reacts to post shave recovery. Here are a few tips to help prevent post shave burn in the future.
Use a Pre Shave Oil
A common step in the shaving process that a lot of people miss is the pre shave routine. Not only does the use of a pre shave oil prevent razor burn and itchiness but it also reduces the chances of getting ingrown hairs. The problem of ingrown hairs is wrongly accepted as a formality but it is so preventable! A pre shave oil will also prevents those little cuts that appear when shaving. The oil will hydrate the skin as well as lubricating the hairs which will allow the razor to glide through like a hot knife through butter. In turn this will eliminate the need to be rough and ragged with the blade and the skin will be forever grateful!
Use a good shaving cream
After a shave, everybody expects to feel like they’ve been pampered. This goes for those who shave themselves or those who offer shaving as a service. The key to a luxurious shave is a good shaving cream. A good shaving cream will form a thicker lather which will create a protective barrier between the skin and razor. Use a shaving brush to whip up the lather and apply it to the area about to be shaved, it will raise the hairs which makes for an even easier shave.
Use Post Shave Products
The purpose of a post shave product is to remoisturise the skin as well as adding a protective layer from the elements. Post shave products come in many forms: balms, lotions, toning sprays. For those who still suffer with razor burn, look for products with soothing ingredients such as aloe vera or shea butter as this will encourage rehydration.
It is very important to note that your razor has to be looked after and blades changed frequently. An old blade will encourage razor burn and we don’t want that, do we?
