If you've never used a pomade before, you've come to the right place! We've put together a comprehensive guide on all different types of pomades, who they're suitable for and why you should be using them on yourself/your clientele! In short, a pomade is the perfect option for hair styling because it comes in so many variants. It serves as the perfect alternative to gels which are generally known to leave a more "stiff" effect whereas most pomades offer a more freeing hold, often allowing the style to be changed throughout the day. So what type of pomades are there? The main two types of pomades you'll find on the market are water based and oil/petrolatum based. The water based product is somewhat of a recent approach, whereas the oil based has generally been the traditional way of making pomades. Which type should I be using? If you are looking to use a product that rinses out easily and doesn't leave residue then water based is for you. Water based pomades will usually rinse out with just water and they often come in many types of consistencies. Also due to the use of less oil in water based products, you're less likely to irritate the skin and encourage acne breakouts. Oil based pomades on the other hand, offer many other benefits. An important one for most people tends to be the fact they don't really dry, allowing them to be reworked and restyled. They also come in a variety of finishes: high shine, extreme shine or some more subtle finishes. Due to the oil in the product, you will have to use less pomade as the days go by as the product will still be in the hair. It takes a lot more effort to remove oil based product from the hair as opposed to water based, so it's worth noting that shampoo will need to be used to fully rid the product.
